What a Download Link Can (and Can't) Tell You About a File

A download link looks the same whether it points to a harmless document or something you'd rather not open. It's worth knowing what that link actually tells you, and what it doesn't.

What It Does Show

A link tells you where a file lives and, often, basic details like the file name and size before you commit to downloading. Some services also show a file type icon, giving a rough idea of what you're about to get.

What It Doesn't Show

A link on its own says nothing about whether the file is safe. Anyone can upload anything to a file-sharing service, the link's legitimacy really comes down to who sent it to you, not the link's appearance.

The Real Signal to Watch

Context matters more than the link itself. A file from someone you know, that you were expecting, is a very different situation than an unsolicited link from an unfamiliar sender. Treat the second case with real caution before downloading anything.

A Simple Habit

If a link arrives out of nowhere, a quick message back confirming the sender actually meant to send it costs nothing and avoids a real problem.
